Caster Brakes

This guide covers caster brake types and how they function to control movement and improve safety. Learn the differences between total lock, wheel brakes, and directional locks, and how to choose the right option based on your application, load, and operating environment.

Top Lock Brake Kit for 8" x 2" Caster
Top Lock Brake

Our most commonly sold wheel brake is the top lock brake, also known as a side lock. It features a pedal on the side of the caster labeled “on” and “off.” Depressing the pedal into the “on” position moves a lever at the top of the caster, locking the wheel only.

Top lock brakes are easily accessible and highly durable. However, they do not lock the swivel, and if not fully depressed into the locked position, the wheel may still attempt to roll.

Tech Lock Brake Kit for 8" x 2" Caster
Tech Lock Brake

Our tech lock brake offers an excellent wheel lock solution. It features a plastic pedal located at the top of the caster, which, when depressed by foot, locks the wheel. This brake creates a secure contact with the wheel’s face, preventing it from rolling. It’s easy to identify and simple to use. When depressing the pedal, you can feel the pressure as it locks firmly in place.

However, the pedal’s location may make it challenging to access under certain equipment.

Universal Brake Kit for 8" x 2" Caster
Universal Face Brake

The Universal face contact brake functions similarly to the tech lock brake. It also utilizes a foot-operated plastic pedal to lock the wheel only. When in the lock position, it applies pressure to the wheel’s face, keeping it from moving.

This type of brake can be easily installed in the field, making it a great choice for adding a brake to an existing caster with a 2″ wide wheel

Caster Solutions
Face Contact Brake

Our Face Contact Brake is a beefier, more durable alternative to our Universal brake option. Depending on the caster series these brakes will be installed on, they come with either a pedal or a t-bar handle to activate the brake.

This brake is welded on to the caster rig itself. Due to these brakes being welded on, we do not allow refunds on casters that are purchased with this option

Caster Solutions
Total-locking Rig

As the name suggests, the total-locking caster rig locks both the wheel and the swivel section of the caster simultaneously. When the pedal is depressed, it engages the total lock mechanism built into the caster.

This brake is ideal for workbenches and other applications where complete stability is required. Whether the cart is in transit on a truck or positioned for a task that involves force against the cart, the wheel and swivel will not move, ensuring safety and effectiveness.
